"I have found that by using a certain work-flow, I can reduce the seams and rendering errors:
#1 Don't ever use the sculpt tools in "Automatic" Paint Mode. Use Mesh or Image Map Paint Mode in separate passes.
#2 Good UV layout.
#3 For characters, edge loops consisting of almost all quads is important, so that sculpting good anatomy is easier.
#4 Sculpt in two passes. The first pass should be done exclusively in "Mesh" paint mode. The second should be done exclusively in "Image Map" mode.
#5 When seams appear (and they will!), use the "Attenuate" brush in "Image Map" Paint Mode to clean-up, and then try to smooth the area using only "Mesh" Paint Mode, as much as possible."
With additional experiments, "Automatic" is suitable for mesh tweaking, but should be used with caution.
In the "Khalid's UVs" thread, Khalid did post several tips that are important.
Kahalis UVs:
Tip #1: The topology of your mesh (and its matching UV's) should be evenly spaced and in quads as much as possible, minimize long thin polys.
Tip #2: Keep the "pixel density" of each UV shell close to equal to each other along UV borders. I use Modo's "UV Pack" to ensure all shells are at the same density. I usually scale up head and hand UV's for greater detail and the border seams have to be handled very carefully.
Tip #3: This tip is the same as Tip #1, but expands upon it.
Tip #4: I use a tablet exclusively with Modo. One of Modo's excellent properties is how well it works with a tablet.
Tip #5: IMHO, 10-15% offset is also valid in zBrush.
Brad's method of unwrapping the head to maximize the UV space is helpful for Modo's image-based sculpting, but it might risk introducing texture stretching. Maximizing pixel density on your mesh is important.
To add to Khalid's tips:
#1 Good edge flow and loops. Look at Bay Raitt's tips and master them. Without good edge flow your models will always suffer.Bay Raitt's Modeling tips.
#2 The most important parts of a character are the head and hands. 90% of people only care about those aspects, make them perfect.
#3 Modo works best with actual polygons and edges. Minimize the use of displacement to add detail where actual geometry and edge loops might give much better results, since displacement maps are pixel resolution dependent and might be very bad for small details.
#4 Displacement tends to look "organic" and polys tend to look "inorganic". Use when appropriate.
#5 Pixels are SQUARE! If possible, try to keep your UV's as close to horizontal or vertical as much as possible!
